Collection
Why keep on collecting?
More than 6.000 species
We look after more than 6.000 different types of plants, trees and shrubs; together over 10.000 items, entered and described in a database. But why do we do this, why are botanic gardens important?
Old phenomenon,
Botanic gardens are an old phenomenon, as early as 1590, the first botanic garden was set up. Its origin is in collecting, describing, using and showing plants for medicinal use. This purpose was later broadened and deepened: not merely material for medicinal use, but also for agricultural applications. To be used as the origin for new cultivations, as reference. Not just a collection of plants, also trees and shrubs were added to the extensive collections.
yet still up to date
In this way, the botanic gardens became treasure troves of genetically original material, an essential source for our future. The source: collections that are being managed in a way fitting to a good museum; with huge respect for and commitment to this living heritage!
